We are pretty sure that this guy needs no introduction, as Gonzo is arguably one of the most popular slot characters ever created. The original Gonzo’s Quest has won many awards and received follow-up titles such as the Megaways version of it, and this time NetEnt brings us a Gonzo-slot which uses the Cluster pays -mechanic where wins are paid for symbol clusters.

 

Overview

Your playarea in Gonzo’s Gold is a 5×5 grid of symbols and wins will be paid for clusters of five or more symbols. There is a Temple-scatter symbol, which works also as a wild and can replace any other symbol to create a winning cluster.

Landing three or more of the Temple-scatters will trigger the Free Spin feature, which starts with 10 free spins no matter how many scatters you landed. However you will also receive a direct win, which is 2x, 20x or 200x your stake depending on did you get 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols.

When the Free Spin feature starts you are presented with a grid of 9 mystery symbols. You get to select one of them and it will reveal your expanding symbol for the duration of the free spins. When you land two of these chosen expanding symbols next to each other either horizontally or vertically, they will expand to cover the whole row or reel respectively. The Free Spin feature can be also retriggered if you manage to land 3+ more Temple-scatters, as this will always credit 10 additional free spins and a direct win of 2-200x your stake depending on the amount of scatters.

We feel like there is definitely a solid good game in here, but to be completely honest, it does feel like it is also missing its full potential a bit. Some additional funny animations, like when you win big and Gonzo tries to catch the coins into his hat in the original Gonzo’s Quest, could have given this game as well a bit of extra spark.
