Blackjack is one of the most well-known casino games around the world, having its roots all the way in the 18th century France. The rules are very simple, which makes the game easy to understand and enjoy for all kinds of players. In case you have never played blackjack or just want a refreshing reminder on how it goes, lets go over the basic rules quickly.
Basics of blackjack
The objective of the game is to win the dealers hand by getting your card count as close to 21 as possible without going over it. If you go over 21 that is a bust and the dealer wins the hand. Before each hand starts you will place your bet for the hand to indicate you want to be dealt in.
Each hand starts with the player receiving two cards. Ace is worth 1 or 11 and that is completely up to the player to decide if his ace is representing 1 or 11 at any given time during the hand. Face cards from Jack to King are valued at 10 and all the numeral cards are representing their pip value. The dealer will be also dealt two cards, but one of his cards will remain hidden.
After the first two cards are dealt the decision making starts. You can either stand which means you are happy with your current cards, or then you can hit which means you want a new card. The most important thing to remember here is that if you go over 21 the hand is bust and automatically lost, so if you have two face cards for example you probably do not want to take a third card unless you really believe it is going to be an Ace.
Now after you are happy with your cards and decide to stand its the dealers turn to play his hand. He will now reveal his hidden card. If he has 17 or more with his two cards, the dealer must stand there. If his total is 16 or under, he must take a new card. If the dealer has an Ace and the total would be 17 or more (but not over 21) when counting the Ace as an 11, he must do so and stand. All in all this means that the dealers play is defined by the game rules and he does not do his own decisions like the player does.
