It’s hard to even try to think of a slot series that would be a more popular and well-known than Play’n GOs “of Dead” series of games. Book of Dead is probably the most famous one of them all in the line-up, but to be honest we have already lost count of how many “of Dead” sequels there are in total by now. Anyway, that is not to say that there wouldn’t be room for one more – so here comes the latest and greatest, Pilgrim of Dead.
Overview
Pilgrim of Dead follows very much on the same footsteps as all the earlier games in the series, having the usual setup which is built on five reels that have three rows on each of them, giving you a grand total of 10 fixed winlines. All of the usual features and charasteristics from the “of Dead” games are present in this release as well; you have the ancient Egypt theme and the Golden Tomb symbol, which acts both as a Wild symbol and a Scatter symbol.
Most notable changes compared to the sister games can be found from the games Free Spin feature. You need to land a minimum of three Golden Tomb Scatters anywhere on the view to trigger the feature, and it always starts with five free spins. Once the Free Spin bonus is triggered, one of the symbols is randomly chosen at the start of it to act as a Special Expanding symbol for the duration of the feature – and again, this is something that hasn’t really changed from the earlier games, so all the true fans of the series will certainly be very familiar with this mechanic already. There is a little twist to it this time however, as now you have the option to reject the first randomly selected symbol if you want. If you choose to do so, a new symbol will be randomly selected and the free spins will begin.
The Special Expanding symbol has another feature to it that is unique for this iteration of the series, and that is the fact that now the first Special Expanding symbol landing on each reel during the feature will become sticky, meaning that it will stay on the same position where it landed on the reel for the duration of the free spins. This is certainly a very welcome change, but it’s also probably at least part of the reason why the Free Spin bonus starts now with only five free spins instead of ten like in many of the other “of Dead” slots. Either way, you can still collect more Free Spins during the feature if you manage to land more Golden Tomb Scatter symbols. Logic with them is the same as during the base game, so landing minimum of three of them will give you five additional free spins – up to a maximum of 30 spins.
Chanz verdict
All in all, this is a very solid “of Dead” game and surely a welcome addition to the series. However, that is also exactly all that it really is and nothing more. Not that much have changed compared to the other instalments in the series, but then again, we are also pretty sure that it is completely intentional that way, as there are tons of players who simply love the mechanics and features we are already so used to see in these games. You cannot change too much, or it just wouldn’t be the “of Dead” game everyone is expecting to get. This is a great title to get familiar with the series if you haven’t played any of the games before, and if you are an old fan already, then you are in for a treat!
