Last week, decathlete Rasmus Roosleht and his coach Mikk Pahapill visited the Chanz office. We sat down for a chat about the past season, their first year working together and what is already taking shape for 2027.
A Good Year with Valuable Lessons
Roosleht has good reason to be satisfied with 2026. He achieved his best results at major championships so far, improved his decathlon personal best and set several individual PBs along the way.
If he had to highlight one result, however, it would not be the overall decathlon score. Roosleht picked his 47.84 personal best in the 400 metres as perhaps the biggest success of the year.
But, of course, his decathlon PB of 8,336 points still carries a special weight of its own. “When you set a personal best in the decathlon, that is always a big achievement,” he said. “Putting ten events together is not easy.”
And inevitably, progress is not always even across all ten events. This season, the discus was one of the more difficult pieces of the puzzle. Roosleht admitted that he lost some confidence in the event for a while and had to work his way through it.
From the coach’s perspective, one of the positives was how consistently Roosleht performed across a long season that included both indoor and outdoor competition. “He was very consistent throughout the season,” Pahapill said. “We set some bigger goals and he achieved them. It was a good year.”
The First Season Working Together
The season was also Roosleht and Pahapill’s first full year working together, giving both athlete and coach time to get to know each other and find what works best.
As a coach, Pahapill can also draw on his own long career as an athlete. His years as a decathlete have given him experience and an instinct for certain details that he might see from a different perspective. At the same time, that experience is only one part of coaching. The right approach still has to be found for each individual athlete.
The nature of coaching has changed as well. Ten or fifteen years ago, finding and gathering the right information required more effort. Today, there is no shortage of it. The challenge is more about filtering out what matters and finding what works for a particular athlete.
That understanding takes time. After a full season together, Pahapill now knows Roosleht much better as an athlete: what works for him, what does not and where their approach could use some adjustment. Those observations will already feed into the training for next season.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The broad plan for 2027 is already in place, although some adjustments will inevitably be made as the season unfolds. Two major competitions are on the horizon: the European Indoor Championships in Valencia in March and the World Championships in Beijing in September.
Before then, there is another winter of training ahead and plenty to work on across all ten events.
Chanz wishes Rasmus and Mikk a successful training period and all the best for the upcoming season!
